Description & Extraction:
Cyperus scariosus is more commonly known as cypriol. This plant largely grows in Madhya Pradesh, India and is called nagarmotha. The smell of cypriol oil is woody and earthy.
Nagarmotha / Cypriol Oilis a prized ingredient in perfumes that are made in India. Cyperus scariosus grows to about 2 1/2 feet, with a thin stem that is dark green in color. It is a flowering shrub, where the flowers measure 2 to 8 inches in length. The nodes are about 1/2 thick in diameter and is in an oval rhizome shape. The stem is aromatic and white in color on the inside. The rhizome is what generates the oil and contains alkaloids, sodium, minerals, along with calcium, sodium, and carbonates. It is distilled using steam distillation from the plants' roots. This weed is largely found only in India and the oil is quite big in India. The cyperus scarious is considered a pest in many countries. The cypriol oil is dark brown in color and can change color to a transparent green. As it changes color, the scent also changes becoming woodier. It is blends with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Labdanum and Patchouli.
Chemical Components:
The main constituents are sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene alcohols and
sesquiterpene ketones.
Toxicological Properties:
As a negative side effect, it could cause bleeding so pregnant women should
avoid this oil.
Uses & Precaution:
- Cypriol oil has decongestative abilities.
- It is used to cure diarrhea and problematic digestive problems. It is
also very helpful in mucus, scanty periods and scabies.
- This essential oil is an effective oil to kill intestinal worms. It
can work as a general tonic and nerve binder; promotes uterine
contractions and can bind stools if you have an upset tummy.
- Cypriol oil works well against anorexia, intestinal bleeding and
non-specific colitis too. This oil is used in other illnesses like skin
diseases, fever, rheumatoid arthritis , gout and other uric acid related
illnesses, general debility, painful menstruation, kidney stones and
fibromyalgia.
- This plant can be used in paste form on skin related ailments. It can
help relieve itching. It can also improve eyesight and be used in eye
related ailments. Cypriol oil is used in perfumes and in incense sticks.
In powder form, cypriol is used in epilepsy and psychosis along with
maintaining a normal body temperature.
